How to get a driving licence in Nepal
The whole process from checking your eligibility to collecting the licence, with the published rules shown alongside the document they came from.
The steps
Apply online
Applications are made through the Department of Transport Management online system rather than at the counter.
Choose your licence category
Pick the category that matches the vehicle you intend to drive. Adding a category later is a separate process with its own requirements.
Select an office and a date
Choose the transport office you will attend and book the date offered to you. Availability varies by office.
Attend the office
Go on the date you were given, bringing the documents that office requires. Requirements differ between offices, so confirm yours in advance.
Biometrics and document verification
Your documents are checked and your biometric details recorded.
Sit the written examination
A multiple-choice test covering traffic rules, signs, vehicle knowledge, pollution and accident awareness. Practise beforehand with a full-length mock.
Take the practical trial
The on-course driving test for your category — the manoeuvres differ between two-wheelers, light vehicles and heavy vehicles.
Retrial, if you need one
If you do not pass the trial, a limited number of retrials is allowed within a fixed window. The current published limits are below.
Licence issued
Once you have passed both parts, your licence is printed and issued by the office.

Trials, retrials and adding a category

| Retrials allowed | A candidate who fails the practical trial may take up to 3 retrials. |
| Retrial window | Retrials must be taken within 90 days from the first failed trial. |
| Written exam when adding a category (category D) | A holder of category D is required to take a written examination when adding another category. |
| Written exam when adding a category (category E) | A holder of category E is required to take a written examination when adding another category. |
